Using Your Dental Benefits Before They Reset on 31 December

If you have been putting off a missing tooth, the calendar matters more than most people realise. The majority of dental plans run on a calendar year, and whatever allowance you have not used by 31 December usually disappears rather than rolling into the new year.

That is worth knowing in October rather than in December, because implant treatment is not a single appointment.

Why implant treatment needs lead time

A dental implant is placed in stages. There is a consultation and 3D scan, the placement itself, a healing period while the implant integrates with the bone, and then the crown. At Dr. Jay Family Dental that integration typically takes three to six months, depending on the site and how your bone responds.

So a plan year that ends on 31 December does not give you time to complete treatment from a standing start in December. What it can give you is time to complete the early stages — the consultation, the imaging, any extraction — while this year’s allowance still exists, with the later stages falling into next year’s.

Three things that expire, not just one

  • Your annual maximum. The cap your plan will pay in a calendar year. Unused amounts almost never carry over.
  • Your FSA balance. Flexible Spending Account money is use-it-or-lose-it for most employers, with a short grace period at best. Dental treatment is an eligible expense.
  • Your deductible. If you have already met it this year, starting treatment now means you are not paying it again from January.

What a consultation in Vernon actually involves

The first visit is an assessment, not a sales appointment. Dr. Krithika Jayaprakash takes a 3D cone beam scan to evaluate the width and height of the bone, checks that the gums are healthy, and confirms there is room for the eventual crown. Only then does she talk about which system suits your case — SDS or Ceraroot, one-piece or two-piece.

If the answer is that an implant is not right for you, that is what you will be told. It is a more useful conversation than an estimate built without a scan.

If you are weighing it up

Patients travel to the Vernon practice from across Tolland and Hartford counties — Manchester, Tolland, Ellington, South Windsor, Bolton and Coventry — largely because metal-free implants are not offered everywhere. Booking the assessment now keeps this year’s options open without committing you to anything.
